hi everyone just a little reminder based on what we learnt today, that a metaphor reveals character and Shakespeare uses it throughout the play. through this, is where we get our plot and theme.

The one thing that stuck in my head is that Cross dressing is the most physical form of deceit. I was also reading my communication studies textbook and I found a definition for Juxtaposition. Juxtaposition/ Contrast is when the writer puts forward two opposite viewpoints, ideas or concepts are placed close to each other for effect. In the play, Juxtaposition is used to show the love and concern Olivia and Viola had for their brothers.

Hello everyone. The use of metaphor so far in the play has helped us to understand the character's emotions. The metaphor "shipwrecked" enables us to understand the emotions of Orsino at the beginning of Act One. He felt shipwrecked in love as he was depressed, lonely and confused because Olivia did not love him.

Hey guys . Metaphor reveals the theme, plot and character and cross dressing is the most physical form of deceit. Also the use of punctuation marks is also important throughout the play like in the beginning of act one where an exclamation mark stresses that the Duke himself was angry as he wants to be with Olivia.

Good day! :) You guys above seem to give a pretty concise summary of what we did in class so mine shouldn't be that long. Shakespeare really is a queer fellow with an amazing way of bringing an idea across. The idea of using metaphors to bring about character, theme and plot is genius. The play of words, with them having soo many interpretations makes it a hundred times easier to grasp feelings and emotions from the characters. We have learnt how 'shipwrecked' Orsino is about Olivia and how fragile he is towards to situation. He would persue her but he is too full of himself. i guess in some case he can be compared to Malvolio. They both have large egos and are portraying it to other characters. I guess that's one reason why Olivia rejected them both. *That was just a random thought* Okay, imma go now. Bye :)

In the play Twelve Night, Act 1 scene 1, Shakespeare uses metaphor as a technique to reveal character, plot and theme. At the beginning, the setting is at the scene of a shipwreck, this metaphor 'shipwreck' reveals the character of Orsino by comparing the love Orsino felt for Olivia to the feeling of being shipwrecked. In the second instance, we encounter the metaphor 'hunting' which reveals plot. The plot of the play is driven by the conflict which is Orsino's unrequited love for Olivia, Orsino's conflict, which would cause him to have to seek out Olivia or hunt as if he were hunting a hart. The metaphor 'hunting' therefore reveals plot. Thirdly, music is compared "to the food of love". Since love is a theme in this play, we can therefore say the metaphor 'music' is used to reveal the theme of love.

One of the major themes in the play is DECEIT, this is present in every aspect of it. however we can safely say that it all starts with Vilola who cross dresses to a young man named Cesario. her reason for doing this was to go serve the duke of illeria Orsino who has forbidden the service of any woman in his court. Viola is a very selfless person though some may think she's stupid for wooing Olivia for Orsino though she has fallen in LOVE with him. Deceit is present between Sir Toby and Sir Andrew where Sir Toby befriends Sir Andrew only cause he bought him alcohol. Even with Olivia who is deceiving the duke by telling him that she cannot be with him because of the death of her brother, however the real reason was because she did not like him.

Viola cross dresses in this scene. The reason for her cross dressing was because the duke would not allow any women to serve in his court, only men. This was why Viola concealed what she was and produced herself as an enuch another name used for cross dressing to him. she goes to serve the duke as a man named Cesario.

Hello!!! In this scene Viola herself cross dressed as the character Cesario. The reason for her cross dressing was because the Duke Orsino did not allow any women to serve in his court as only men was allowed to do so. Therefore, Viola concealed who she was and made herself as an eunuch which is another term used for cross dressing.Viola is a very selfless person and uses a form of DECEIT through her cross dressing in the play...

Humour is a technique used by shakespeare to reveal theme. It is used by the character Feste to reveal the theme of deceit. Feste uses puns, metaphors to convey his thoughts. He uses puns like 'he that is well hanged in this world needs to fear no colours'-lines 4-5. The word colours means; colours that we see, cholers which is anger and collars as in a shirt collar or a noose around ones neck. He also hides behind his words for eample he would speak of himself in the third person singular.

Feste is the clown that is employed by Olivia. He works at her court. Feste, even though he is known to everyone as the fool, is indeed very smart and witty and speaks through puns. Feste points out traits about Olivia that shows that some of her actions contradict. Olivia told him that she believes that her brother's soul is in heaven, but yet she is seen wearing only black and mourning his death. She should rather be happy that his soul is in heaven if this is what she believes. Feste recognizes this and says " The more fool, madonna, to mourn for your brother's soul, being in heaven."

Its amassing how far the issue of class barrier comes from. while one may think that such issue only existed in Shakespeare's time the reality is that this is not so. in today's society there are much bigger issues that are prevalent and quite dominant in society. for example the effect of racism, though Shakespeare might of raised a simple class issue it can actually be contradicted to modern society. example the issue Shakespeare raised in the play was that sir Toby could not marry Maria because she was a mistress and he was someone of higher class than her. However, in contrast to modern day society a woman of African decent who is a maid lets say, could never marry a wealthy white man or a Syrian to be more specific, simply because (1) she is of lower class than him.

A Theme is a message that resonates throughout the play, an idea or concept that is seen constantly repeating itself. Throughout Twelfth Night we see the the theme of Relationships. Determination and Rejection can then be placed under this theme as they also play a role in some of the relationships present in the play.

Well today's class was constructive! The main thing I've learnt today is that TECHNIQUES REVEAL THEME. I guess now I'll never get that out of my head. One of the issues discussed in class was the relationship between Sir Toby and Olivia. We've learnt that sir Toby and Olivia share quite a relationship. In reality, Sir Toby is Olivia's uncle. However as seen in the play the relationship the table turns. Olivia portrays a role of being Sir Toby's mother. This was seen as Olivia takes such an affectionate role in taking care of him when he was drunk. She is very gentle with him, where she doesn't call him drunk in front of his face. She has a certain level of respect for him.

Language can be derived through literary devices. One of the main devices is metaphor. There are about 15 types of metaphors but the two popular ones are adjectival and verbal metaphors. Adjectival metaphors are basically metaphors which contain an adjective."When the noun is a metaphor then the adjective is also very likely to be in the same sense as the metaphor. It is also possible to use the adjective in contrast to the metaphor, perhaps in linking back to the original subject.

A symbol is anything that has meaning attached to it. It represents or suggest an idea or a belief. In reference to Twelfth Night, Olivia had sent Malvolio to return a ring that belonged to her, to Cesario. I quote, "Run after that peevish messenger.....He left this ring." This element which Olivia once wore is symbolic of marriage, commitment and loyalty. Its symbolic representational traits of Olivia is that it signifies that she is no longer in mourning, it demonstrates that she is ready and determined to seek her hearts desire, this being Cesario.

The pluperfect is a type of verb form, traditionally treated as one of the tenses of certain languages, used in referring to something that occurred earlier than the time being considered, when the time being considered is already in the past. The meaning of the pluperfect is equivalent to that of English verb forms such as "(we) had arrived" or "(they) had written".
