INSTRUCTIONS: Please watch the scene below. Answer the following questions when you post your blogs in this forum. 1.Who crossed dressed in this scene? 2.What reasons were stated or implied for the purpose of cross-dressing? INSTRUCTIONS: Read the following speech below taken from Act 1 Scene 2 3.What is a eunuch? 4.When Viola says she is going to speak to him in many sorts of music, is she going to use language to deceive the Duke? We learnt previously that music is the food of love and it satisfies the hunger of the Duke's appetite , what kinds of questions come to your mind when Viola says she is going to use many sorts of music? Viola: Conceal me what i am, and be my aid For such disguise as haply shall become The form of my intent. I'll serve this Duke. Thou shalt present me as an eunuch to him. It may be worth thy pains, for i can sing And speak to him in many sorts of music... That will allow me very worth his service. What else may hap to time I will commit, Only shape though thy silence to my wit. ORSINO:
If music be the food of love, play on, Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, The appetite may sicken and so die. That strain again! It had a dying fall. O, it came o'er my ear like the sweet sound That breathes upon a bank of violets, Stealing, and giving odour. Enough, no more! 'Tis not so sweet now as it was before. O spirit of love, how quick and fresh art thou, That, notwithstanding thy capacity Receiveth as the sea, nought enters there, Of what validity and pitch soe'er, But falls into abatement and low price Even in a minute. So full of shapes is fancy That it alone is high fantastical. CURIO: Will you go hunt, my Lord? ORSINO: What, Curio? CURIO: The hart? Often times the seeds of Shakespeare's message are posited in the very beginning of the play. Here is an excerpt that is metaphorical. Please identify one metaphor that has been discussed in class about this opening scene and comment on its effectiveness. ( The metaphor is usually effective because it reveals plot, theme or character) Please give details. DEAR STUDENT: When writing a critical analysis about the plot of Drama, a key question is: is the plot clear and simple enough for you to follow clearly? Is any confusion created by the plot intentional--by that we mean confusion which the dramatist has built into the plot to achieve the desired result? And does this intentional confusion work? Let us simplify.... 1. Please list the conflicts revealed in each major scene of the play
2. Identify the main conflicts. What creates theses conflicts? What is the relationship between the major and minor conflicts? Are they kept in balance throughout the play? 3. Explain how these conflicts are first made evident. Pay close attention to the dialogue. 4. Summarize how conflict is developed through the whole play and how it is resolved. ACTIVITIES 1, 2 and 3 ARE TO BE COMPLETED IN YOUR EXERCISE BOOK. this task is to be completed by Mon 16th September,2013. ACTIVITY 4 will be completed on this forum. PLEASE POST YOUR COMMENTS no later than Wednesday 18th of September, 2013. |
