The most prominent theme in this scene has been noted to be that of deception. This has occurred with Viola cross dressing to be a man, Cesario and where Sir Toby has deceived Sir Andrew's friendship. The first technique would be language, through the use of sarcasm. Just seconds before Sir Andrew arrived Sir Toby was showering false praise onto Sir Andrew to Maria. Sir Toby was not straightforward with Sir Andrew, he used a lot of sarcasm which Sir Andrew took as sincere compliments. Sir Toby even fed him lies to ensured he stayed so Sir Toby can use him to his desires. You can clearly see how naive and easy to manipulate, Sir Andrew is. One of Sir Toby's statement was, "Wherefore are these things hid? Wherefore have these gifts a curtain before 'em?" Sir Toby was on the piano whilst Sir Andrew was performing a quick dance. As seen, Sir Toby used sarcasm to tell Sir Andrew what a magnificent dancer he is when he actually isn't. This is not a true friendship. At one point even Sir Andrew was deceiving his own self. This was seen where Sir Andrew was speaking about how he should have spent more time in the tongues instead of fencing, dancing and bear baiting and later on he calls himself one of the best dancers in Illyria. What kind of impression do you now get of Sir Andrew? Is he in any form fit to be Olivia's husband? No. He is the total opposite of witty...very easy to manipulate, and sir Toby uses that to his advantage. In addition this scene gives a clear insight to Sir Toby's character and what his motives are. This would fall under the technique of characterization.

In a more explanatory mode where I said.."This was seen where Sir Andrew was speaking about how he should have spent more time in the tongues instead of fencing, dancing and bear baiting and later on he calls himself one of the best dancers in Illyria." What I really meant was, he called himself a great dancer but as seen in the play above...he's terrible. If he has spent soo much time in dancing and that's how bad he is, could you imagine him bear-baiting? Basically he cannot dance but because of Sir Toby's sarcasm (which he thought was meaningful) he made himself believe he was a great dancer. You guys understand me? This technique of language not only brought out the characterization of Sir Toby but also Sir Andrew. He is not as clever as portrayed to be.

In this scene, we see Cross Dressing. Viola is crossed dressed as Cesario, who in 3 days already has the approval of the Duke. However, due to her being cross dressed, we see a prominent theme being represented here. The theme of Deception. Cross dressing in itself, represents the highest form of deceit. It's a physical representation of what you're actually not. Viola however has to do this because women weren't allowed to serve in the Duke's palace thus showing that she is brave and witty. Not only do we see deception through cross dressing but also through friendship. This is seen within the ''bond'' between Sir Toby and Sir Andrew. Sir Toby doesn't have Sir Andrew's best interest. Because of this we see an insight to the character of Sir Toby as well. He's cunning and deceptive. Deceit is a major theme running through this play and could be noted throughout this scene.

In this scene, the theme of Love was shown through The Duke, Orsino.

Tell me some more about Setting Celeste... Can you identify other resonances of darkness in the scene? you mentioned 1. mood 2. gestures of the servants etc What other factors contribute to the dark setting?

Others factors that contribute to the dark setting are 1. Orsino's attendants are all clothed in black. Their complete attires are black in colour which contributes to the dull mood in Orsino's court. 2. Inside the court is also very dark, there is little light entering and the walls are dark coloured also.

In this scene i learnt that the first technique we see that Shakespeare uses is cross dressing and he uses this to portray deception in the play. Now this is done through viola who disguises herself as a guy named Cesario. I find it quite interesting how he gives us this clue at the beginning of the play he highlights that there would be deception present in the play, this is seen right before viola and her brother were shipwrecked. they were both disguised singing and having a joyful time. then there is Love another theme we can find in this scene and Shakespeare uses Orsino to demonstrate this state of mind and heart. Orsino is madly in Love with Olivia who doesn't Love him and though this has him frustrated and feels shipwrecked he will not give up he is determined to make Olivia his wife. Now we know that at the beginning of the scene there is a shipwreck where Viola looses her brother this was another opening clue to what was going to take place in the play. though its not the same exact thing the, it has a lot of meaning.

The fundamental emotions the duke experiences because of being rejected by Olivia, has him frustrated, feeling sick, weak, impatient, lonely and still yearns for Olivias Love. This is what we refer to as being in the state of feeling shipwrecked.

One technique Shakespeare used that helped me understand his thematic concerns was language. The language in the play is very important since we were able to gather much information from it and we were able to understand other techniques as well. For instance we were able to understand and build on the type of character Shakespeare demonstrates through Orsino. In the first few lines we see that the Duke is in love and desperate for a companion but not from just anyone, he wants Olivia to be his wife (who does not feel the same for him). And we are able to tell what kind of character the duke is, he is obsessed with makimg Olivia his wife and we see this when he claims to want excess of music since it is the food of love .Also theme helps me understand twelfth night . And he theme most prominent throught out the play is deception and which is seen when Viola has to disguise herself as a man after being shipwrecked in order to work in the duke's court. Another form off deception is seen with the 'friendship' of Sir Andrew and Sir Toby since Sir Toby only uses and deceives Andrew just to support his habits and entertain himself .

Cross Dressing was portrayed in this scene where Viola crossed dressed as Cesario after being shipwrecked. The theme of Deception was seen through this Cross dressing in itself which represents the highest form of deceit. Viola had to dress as a man as women weren't allowed to serve in the Duke's palace of Illyria and she was also in love with the Duke himself. Another form of deception was seen with the friendship of Sir Andrew and Sir Toby since Sir Toby only uses and deceives Sir Andrew.

In this scene, cross dressing is introduced and used to represent the theme of deception. This occurs when Viola cross dresses herself as Cesario in order to allowed to work in the Duke's court, since women weren't allowed there. This presented problems for both the Duke and Viola as Cesario as the developed feelings for each other but had to hide it. Deception was the cause of other problems.

In this scene cross dressing was seen through the eyes of Viola .Deception is shown here because she is of woman and not of man because the Duke does not allow women to be in his court,so a big risk was taken. She is also and independent woman and this however reveals character, why do i say this ? I say this because she is on her own and she has to think outside of the box in order for her to survive. Her other half is not here so she has to be smart in her thinking.Another Theme shown in this scene is 'friendship'',we can see the developing relationship between Viola and the Duke becoming a close friends with one another later on Viola becoming his Messenger of love.

In this scene we see cross dress as the technique being used. Viola is transforming herself to be manly and disguising herself as a man and is going by the name of Cesario.
