Costuming plays a major role by portraying the status and qualities of the individuals in Illyria. A vast amount of costumes were used as symbols; veil (putting it on and removing it), Sir Toby and his yellow stockings, Viola cross dressing to a man and even Olivia sending a ring to Viola. Costuming adds to plot either by creating conflicts or questions or clearing them up. Example, When Oliva wore black and said she was mourning the death of her brother for seven years, we did not expect her to love the Duke or anyone else. However Shakespeare twisted it and Olivia fell in love with a woman dressed as a man and then later on married her brother (Viola's brother). Costuming by itself cannot explain the plot of the play but instead it adds to different techniques such as imagery. Imagery would be another technique one would use because of the fact Viola cross-dressed. It created a problem because now Olivia is in love with Cesario which leads to Olivia sending a ring to a woman dressed as a man.

Symbols represent ideas or concepts. It gives meaning to what is being portrayed. One of Shakespeare’s techniques of portraying the characters in Twelfth Night is with the use of costumes, so therefore costumes are symbolic. Once instance of this where costumes give meaning to what is being portrayed is the scene where Cesario goes to visit Olivia. Olivia, who doesn’t care for that visit used a veil to hide her face when she first heard of Cesario’s presence. This black veil signified that Olivia was in mourning and didn’t wish to be bothered. But Olivia was captivated by Cesario looks and eventually removed her veil to signify that she was ready to listen to what he was saying and was ready to create a relationship. It gives meaning to other techniques in the play, especially to the narrative technique, plot structure. From the scene mentioned above, it can be predicted that because Olivia fell in love with Cesario, there was going to be confusion concerning love.
